THAT'S IT.

I came to meditation early on.

Not through a wellness app or a retreat center. Through martial arts, mostly. Decades of trying to stay present under pressure, clear when things got fast and complicated. At some point I learned the things I was training on the mat had names, a 2,500-year-old practice called mindfulness and shamatha, mushin, zanshin, and other labels for states of mind.

I got certified to teach mindfulness meditation eventually. But I'd been teaching variations of meditations long before that.

The technique I primarily practice and teach is called shamatha, sometimes translated as calm abiding. Breath, attention, noticing when you've wandered, coming back. That's the whole thing.

What I've found, after teaching it to beginners, to athletes, to people in high-pressure work environments, is that most people don't need more information about meditation. They need someone to just show them what to do and tell them the truth about what to expect.

That's what I try to do here.

THE PRACTICE IS SIMPLE. SIMPLE IS NOT THE SAME AS EASY.

Your mind will be busy. You'll feel restless. Some days will feel like you're doing it wrong. You're not. That's just what the practice looks like from the inside, especially at the beginning.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Most of what you've heard about meditation is either oversold or mystified. It won't empty your mind. It won't fix your life. It probably won't produce blissful states or dramatic revelations.

What it will do, if you practice consistently, is make you a little more present. A little less reactive. Better at noticing what's actually happening before you respond to it.

People who practice regularly often report a longer pause before a sharp response. More patience in conversations. An ability to notice stress building before it takes over. Subtle things. Useful things.

That's enough to make it worth ten minutes a day.

SOME PEOPLE SIT FOR YEARS BEFORE THEY FEEL LIKE THEY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING.

It doesn't have to take that long. Clear instruction and honest expectations go a long way. That's what I try to provide here.


HOW I TEACH IT

Instruction first. Philosophy later, if you want it.

The first thing I'll ask you to do is sit down and try it. Five minutes. No backstory required. Everything else, the history, the neuroscience, the Buddhist roots, is available when you're curious. But the practice doesn't need any of it to work.

I teach a secular, practice-first approach drawing from the shamatha tradition as taught through Dharma Moon and the lineage of David Nichtern. It works for skeptics. It works for people who've tried meditation before and quit. It works for people who think they're too restless, too busy, or too analytical to sit still.

(It especially works for those people, actually.)

PRINCIPLES NOT RULES.

Meditation isn't a checklist. There's no perfect posture, no correct number of minutes, no right way to feel. There are principles that support the practice, and a lot of room inside them to find what works for you. That's how I teach, and it's how I practice.
